Game overview
Mahjong Ways 2 expands the middle three reels while retaining its predecessor’s mahjong symbols, cascades and golden transformations, creating a different layout and winning combinations. Its initial free-spin count and third-reel rules also differ.

Tile layout and special symbols
Reels two, three and four each gain an extra row in this five-reel layout. The official document lists 2000 ways. Regular tiles include honours, characters, circles and bamboo; their combination values appear in the official paytable.
Wilds substitute for all symbols except Scatter. Gold is a state of certain regular symbols; not every golden tile is already an active Wild.

Golden regular symbols can appear on reels two, three and four. Wilds and Scatters are excluded from this regular-symbol transformation.
Only golden symbols participating in the previous winning combination transform into Wilds for the next stage after replacement symbols fall. First identify the current payout, then check how retained positions change after the refill.

The base game starts at 1×. After a paying cascade, the second stage uses 2×, followed by 3× and 5×. The fourth and subsequent cascades remain at 5×.
This multiplier progression applies within one cascade sequence, not across every new spin in a session. The bar above the grid indicates the current stage.

Three Scatters trigger an initial 10 free spins, with two more for each additional Scatter. Free spins can also be retriggered.
The bonus-stage multiplier progression rises to 2×, 4×, 6× and 10×. All regular symbols on the third reel are golden during this stage, excluding Wilds and Scatters. Their transformation after contributing to a win still follows the golden-symbol timing rules.
